From: Poison Apple ProductionsAN INTERVIEW WITH OUR ACTOR OF THE WEEK:
ELI VAL VERDE
Introduce yourself, and tell us how old you are!
Eli Val Verde, 14 years old
Why do you love theatre?
I love theater because it has helped me with my insecurities and helped me be a better person over the years. When I started theater at Poison Apple, I was in first grade. My teacher at the time had recommended that I participate because she thought I had a good voice and wanted to hear me sing. If it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t be where I am today.
How long have I been at Poison Apple?
About 8 years.
What has been your favorite show that you've performed in?
It’s a three way tie between Honk JR., Annie Jr., and The Addams Family Young@Part. Honk Jr. because it was fun, Annie Jr. because of how the show flowed and working in the round, and The Addams Family Young@Part because of the songs.
Favorite Role?
Daddy Warbucks (Annie JR.) and Lucas (The Addams Family Young@Part).
What’s something you’ve learned from participating in theatre?
To always try something new when the director has an idea. Also, remembering my choreography and remembering it when it gets changed. Finally, to stop talking when the director (or any of the staff) is talking.
Can you tell us about a moment onstage when something didn't go as planned? How did it turn out?
In Annie Jr. someone in the front row had dropped their hand fan. I was in the next scene and knew that I had to pace around. So, while saying my line and pacing, I picked it up and said “Hmm I’ve got to get the maid to clean around here” and gently put it on their lap. I then continued on with my line and the scene.
What's one piece of advice you'd like to give to someone stepping onstage for the first time?
It’s okay to mess up. Take a breath and seize your moment.
Is there anyone you'd like to give a shout-out to for supporting you on your acting journey?
My friends inside and outside Poison Apple. My directors and all of the amazing people I’ve met at Poison Apple. I love them all dearly and they all have a special spot in my heart.
