Programs to feature 1800s-themed activities and topics

Prairie Grove, AR - Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park will host interpretive programs each week throughout April.

Friday, April 14
2 p.m. - 3 p.m., Historic House Tour, Hindman Hall
On this guided tour through the park’s historic buildings, visitors can explore the similarities and differences between the ways of life experienced by today’s families and those who settled here prior to the Civil War. Tickets are $6 per adult and $4 for ages 6-12. Children 5 and under are admitted for free.

3 p.m. - 4 p.m., Battlefield Tour, Hindman Hall
Join a park interpreter for a 1/2-mile walk along the ridgeline where the heaviest fighting occurred during the Civil War Battle of Prairie Grove on Dec. 7, 1862.

Saturday, April 15
9 a.m. - 11 a.m., Spring Cleanup, Bandstand
The park is hosting a spring cleanup in coordination with two nationwide volunteer events: The Great American Cleanup, sponsored by Keep Arkansas Beautiful, and Park Day, sponsored by the American Battlefield Trust. Volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks, such as painting, fence maintenance, trash pickup and more!

1 p.m. - 3 p.m., State Park Beautification, Bandstand
The park will resume the morning’s Park Day efforts, sponsored by the American Battlefield Trust. Volunteers are needed to beautify the flowerbeds around park buildings.

3 p.m. - 4 p.m., Battlefield Tour, Hindman Hall
Join a park interpreter for a 1/2-mile walk along the ridgeline where the heaviest fighting occurred during the Civil War Battle of Prairie Grove on Dec. 7, 1862.

Sunday, April 16

8 a.m. - 5 p.m., Earth Day BINGO, Hindman Hall
Celebrate Earth Day with the park. Stop by the Hindman Hall Museum to pick up a BINGO board. After getting a BINGO, return to the Hindman Hall Museum to collect your prize.

10 a.m. - 10:45 a.m., Corn Husk Creatures, Amphitheater
Manufactured toys and goods were scarce on the Ozark frontier, so kids had fun with the resources available to them in their natural environment. Join us for this fun, historic activity that was passed from Native Americans to pioneers.

11 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., Nature Collage, Schoolhouse
Children during the 1860s had to use their imagination and what they found in nature when playing outdoors. Join us as we use items found around the park and turn them into one-of-a-kind works of art.

Learning about our ancestors can give us a glimpse into their lives and legacy. Join us this evening as staff share different research methods to trace Civil War soldiers and their families. Space is limited. To register, please call 479-846-2990. Tickets are $10 per person.

Five of the U.S. Presidents were Civil War veterans. Discover how their Civil War experiences prepared them for office and influenced their presidencies.

11 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., Name That Contraption, Latta Kitchen
Ozark settlers used a wide variety of gadgets to help them accomplish their everyday tasks. Visitors will be put to the test as they try to identify some 19th-century “contraptions” and how they were used.
