“Water is in peril throughout the world. Threats due to climate change include heat waves, extreme droughts, acidification, rising sea levels, severe storms, flooding, pollution, land degradation and mismanagement of groundwater. However, Water is also a source of Regeneration. Water and its systems nurture flora and fauna, and humans and their environment. Wetlands protect against sea rise and flooding, and bodies of water in rivers, lakes and oceans are a source of wonder and energy.
The artist collective, Think About Water (TAW), comprised of visual artists who are known for their decades-long work addressing global water issues, is presenting a selected exhibition of their work. The artists focus on both the challenges facing water systems and how water heals and replenishes the environment.
Lauren McManus makes maps of watersheds, painter and naturalist Ilana Manolson explores rivers and swamps. Ellen Kozak’s videos explore the Hudson river as a living organism and Leila Daw creates tapestries of rivers as lifelines of the planet. Susan Hoffman Fisher focuses on water transformations and sculptor Roz Driscoll creates evocative installations. Artist and curator Lisa Reindorf depicts nature defending against sea rise and paintings by Fredericka Foster convey the grandeur of bodies of water.
The setting of the gallery in the town of Pelham, located on the sound and the Hutchinson River is particularly apt for this exhibit as the community is confronting the impact of flooding, water pollution and other water issues. This exhibit by selected artists from the (TAW) collective will inspire audiences to engage with the importance of water to our lives.”
