St. John's Military School Chapel helped each one of our Old Boys grow into men. Many will never forget the smell of the incense, the creak of the pews, the sound of the organ belting out God of our Fathers, the beauty of the stained glass windows or the thump on the head from a class ring. Many were baptized, confirmed, and even had their calling!
From the book of The History of St. John's by Lefty Loy: "The Chapel arrived on campus in 1947, at a price of $2000. And the story begins.... when World War II ended in the fall of 1945, Camp Phillips, an Army training base southwest of Salina, was deactivated. Many of the buildings at the camp were sold by the government. These conditions gave COL Clem, Superintendent, an opportunity to expand St. John's. With enrollment growing, the Corps had outgrown the chapel which was located in Vail Hall. John Bradford Armstrong who was stationed at the Smoky Hill Army Air Field near the school, endeared himself to SJMS and Salina. After his death a movement began to have a new chapel dedicated as a memorial to this young man, who represented the ideals of the school. The building was selected by COL Clem and was moved, remodeled and furnished." Today, the Chapel is used for Memorial Services or weddings and is an extension of the Museum.
Our reunion, October 11 -13 will give you an opportunity to sit in the pews, hear the sound of our organ and have a blessing by Rev. Tom Fiske, OB 1972. You won't want to miss this service on Saturday morning!
