Schools and Libraries
January 31, 2023
From: The Brookfield LibraryDear Neighbors,
Valentine’s Day isn’t the only reason why love is in the air—February is also National Library Lover’s Month, a time to celebrate libraries, librarians, book lovers, and lovers of libraries. We have a full slate of programs, book discussions and activities this month, and I’m sure you’ll find lots to LOVE about The Brookfield Library. We have Valentine Card Making and a Valentine Banner craft for adults, plus a Valentine Hanging Heart craft for kids. You may also want to try Meditative Watercoloring, take a sewing or computer class, or just enjoy a movie. Whatever your preference, we have something for everyone.
Our annual Teddy Bear Sleepover is back this year on February 3, followed by Take Your Child to the Library Day on February 4. We hope you’ll bring your kids (and their teddy bears) to one or more of the fun events we have planned over those two days!
We’re looking forward to the formation of our new Teen Council, whose first meeting will be on February 1. Kids in grades 6–12 are invited to come play an active role in planning Teen programs and events along with our Teen Librarian, Zanny Stowell. We look forward to meeting some new faces and hearing your feedback!
You still have plenty of time to come see our Connecticut Calligraphers exhibit in the Art Gallery, and we hope you’ll join us at our Art Reception and calligraphy demonstration on Saturday, February 11 from 2–4 pm. We’ll close out the month with a concert featuring “The Softer Side of Celtic” with Jeff Snow. Jeff will share his love and knowledge of his Scottish heritage in a delightful program of traditional and original tunes.
What’s not to love? Hope to see you soon!

Concert
Jeff Snow
The Softer Side of Celtic
Sunday, February 26
2:00–3:30 pm
In the Community Room
Growing up as the son of a drummer in a bagpipe band and in a home where older Celtic songs were the everyday sounds, Jeff Snow developed a love for the music of Scotland, England and Ireland. His concerts have been described as "quiet and relaxing " and much of it is, but sometimes he'll break out and the foot stomping begins.
The Softer Side of Celtic combines music, storytelling and history from England, Ireland and Scotland for an exciting, enjoyable concert. A typical concert includes a guitar, bouzouki and the autoharp and is an event the audience will talk about for a long time.

Inti is not the woman she once was, either, changed by the harm she’s witnessed?inflicted by humans on both the wild and each other. Yet as the wolves surprise everyone by thriving, Inti begins to let her guard down, even opening herself up to the possibility of love. But when a farmer is found dead, Inti knows where the town will lay blame. Unable to accept her wolves could be responsible, Inti makes a reckless decision to protect them. But if the wolves didn’t make the kill, then who did? And what will Inti do when the man she is falling for seems to be the prime suspect?
Propulsive and spell-binding, Charlotte McConaghy's Once There Were Wolves is the unforgettable story of a woman desperate to save the creatures she loves?if she isn’t consumed by a wild that was once her refuge.

Fact Not Fiction
The Spy and the Traitor

Copies of the book are available for checkout at the Circulation Desk.
New York Times Bestseller • The celebrated author of Double Cross and Rogue Heroes returns with a thrilling Americans-era tale of Oleg Gordievsky, the Russian whose secret work helped hasten the end of the Cold War.
“The best true spy story I have ever read.”—JOHN LE CARRÉ
Named a Best Book of the Year by The Economist • Shortlisted for the Bailie Giffords Prize in Nonfiction
If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.
For nearly a decade, as the Cold War reached its twilight, Gordievsky helped the West turn the tables on the KGB, exposing Russian spies and helping to foil countless intelligence plots, as the Soviet leadership grew increasingly paranoid at the United States' nuclear first-strike capabilities and brought the world closer to the brink of war. Desperate to keep the circle of trust close, MI6 never revealed Gordievsky's name to its counterparts in the CIA, which in turn grew obsessed with figuring out the identity of Britain's obviously top-level source. Their obsession ultimately doomed Gordievsky: the CIA officer assigned to identify him was none other than Aldrich Ames, the man who would become infamous for secretly spying for the Soviets.
Unfolding the delicious three-way gamesmanship between America, Britain, and the Soviet Union, and culminating in the gripping cinematic beat-by-beat of Gordievsky's nail-biting escape from Moscow in 1985, Ben Macintyre's latest may be his best yet. Like the greatest novels of John le Carré, it brings readers deep into a world of treachery and betrayal, where the lines bleed between the personal and the professional, and one man's hatred of communism had the power to change the future of nations.

Everyone thinks Emmy Dockery is crazy. Obsessed with finding the link between hundreds of unsolved cases, Emmy has taken leave from her job as an FBI researcher. Now all she has are the newspaper clippings that wallpaper her bedroom, and her recurring nightmares of an all-consuming fire.
Not even Emmy's ex-boyfriend, Field Agent Harrison "Books" Bookman, will believe her that hundreds of kidnappings, rapes, and murders are all connected. That is, until Emmy finds a piece of evidence he can't afford to ignore. More murders are reported by the day—and they're all inexplicable. No motives, no murder weapons, no suspects. Could one person really be responsible for these unthinkable crimes?
INVISIBLE is James Patterson's scariest, most chilling stand-alone thriller yet.

Perfect Match
You Had Me at Hola by Alexis Daria
Tuesday, February 28, 6:30–7:30 pm
In the Community Room
New members are always welcome!
Copies of the book are available for checkout at the Circulation Desk.
RITA® Award Winning author Alexis Daria brings readers an unforgettable, hilarious rom-com set in the drama-filled world of telenovelas—perfect for fans of Jane the Virgin and The Kiss Quotient.
Leading Ladies do not end up on tabloid covers.
After a messy public breakup, soap opera darling Jasmine Lin Rodriguez finds her face splashed across the tabloids. When she returns to her hometown of New York City to film the starring role in a bilingual romantic comedy for the number one streaming service in the country, Jasmine figures her new “Leading Lady Plan” should be easy enough to follow—until a casting shake-up pairs her with telenovela hunk Ashton Suárez.
Leading Ladies don’t need a man to be happy.
After his last telenovela character was killed off, Ashton is worried his career is dead as well. Joining this new cast as a last-minute addition will give him the chance to show off his acting chops to American audiences and ping the radar of Hollywood casting agents. To make it work, he’ll need to generate smoking-hot on-screen chemistry with Jasmine. Easier said than done, especially when a disastrous first impression smothers the embers of whatever sexual heat they might have had.
Leading Ladies do not rebound with their new co-stars.
With their careers on the line, Jasmine and Ashton agree to rehearse in private. But rehearsal leads to kissing, and kissing leads to a behind-the-scenes romance worthy of a soap opera. While their on-screen performance improves, the media spotlight on Jasmine soon threatens to destroy her new image and expose Ashton’s most closely-guarded secret.
