From: Choral Society Of PensacolaOn Saturday, May 13, when we present the final concert of our season, the 100 voices of the Choral Society will resound in one of Pensacola's most beautiful historic venues, First United Methodist Church. Entitled Rejoice!, the program features nine sacred masterworks, including anthems, spirituals, and pieces for multiple choirs.
FUMC is Florida's oldest Methodist church, and its website notes that its history "...dates back to 1821, when a mission was established by the Mississippi Conference and the Reverend Alexander Talley was appointed as missionary...The mission began by holding meetings in the courthouse and the old theater..." The first church was located on the corner of Intendencia and Tarragona Streets; the congregation later moved to Palafox and Garden.
The cornerstone for the current sanctuary on Wright Street, in which we'll perform, was laid in 1908, and construction was completed in 1910. The expanded choir loft was dedicated in early 2002, and a new organ, built by Tom Helms, was dedicated in August of that year. "This organ consists of a four-manual and pedal ebony console, a solid white oak case plus 4,153 pipes all strategically voiced for Pensacola First United Methodist Church." and this majestic instrument will be played to spectacular effect during our concert by Hyunjoo Kim.
