Over the past few weeks, thousands of Nevadans have gathered outside of Republican offices, including Mark Amodei’s, to protest them for refusing to defend Nevada against Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s indiscriminate and harmful DOGE cuts.
Last month, Joe Lombardo’s press office tweeted, “we need DOGE reforms in Nevada!”
See how these reckless cuts and layoffs are impacting Nevada below:
- Elon Musk fired veterans and made cuts to the VA. Veterans account for about 34% of the nearly 14,000 civilian federal employees in the state.
- DOGE announced plans to eliminate a Las Vegas Social Security office that services thousands of Nevadans.
- DOGE fired Nevada’s GSA workers, whose jobs are to maintain and secure federal properties.
- Musk cut National Park Service employees across the state, including more than a dozen at Nevada’s Lake Mead National Recreation, including those who tested for toxicity levels in the water. Lake Mead was the ninth most-visited site in the country and has an economic impact of $358 million on Nevada’s economy.
- DOGE cut an Indian Health Service center and Bureau of Indian Affairs location in Elko, that provides primary care to over 11,000 patients from four Native colonies and three reservations.
- DOGE fired Forest Service workers who work to prevent and manage forest fires, increasing the risk of deadly wildfires.

KUNR: Veterans and supporters protest President Trump in Carson City
Key points:
- Dozens of people gathered in a snowstorm in Carson City on Friday afternoon to protest how President Donald Trump’s policies are impacting veterans.
- On top of federal firings, Trump’s administration also plans on reorganizing and cutting more than 80,000 jobs from the Department of Veterans Affairs.
- Demonstrators shared concerns about how that will impact health care, school, and housing resources for veterans.
- Nicole Kelling, a Navy veteran, said wait times are already challenging.
- “My appointment to get an MRI, I had to wait months to get this appointment,” Kelling said.
- Audrey Way is a disabled Army veteran who also works at the VA, adjudicating benefits claims. She said her job is safe for now, but she’s dealing with the disruption Trump has caused.
- “We’re extraordinarily demoralized right now. We’re spending more time dealing with his policies than actually helping veterans,” Way said.
- Many people said they also plan to protest outside of Republican Congressman Mark Amodei’s office to demand his support.
- These protestors joined a nationwide march taking place in Washington, D.C., and other state capitals.
KOLO: Hundreds of protesters gather outside Nevada congressman’s office
Key points:
- Nearly 1,400 people showed up to rally in front of Congressman Mark Amodei’s office today.
- “I think we have to take responsibility for our freedoms that have been ensured historically in this country. And I sadly feel that we have to take them back,” said Reno resident Michael McCracken.
- Organizers say the decision to protest was due to Amodei’s refusal to discuss the agenda of President Trump and Elon Musk with his constituents.
- “We are here demanding that he hears our voices, that he recognizes that we are his constituents. And as much as he wants to kiss the ring of Donald Trump, the people he needs to listen to are right here in his community,“ says nurse and concerned resident, Kate Schopp.
- The event was organized by Indivisible Northern Nevada and 3rd Act. Those who showed up told KOLO 8 they have several concerns, including issues with immigration, our nation’s budget, and what they call basic human rights.
- “We are here so that we can stand up for ourselves, stand up against misogyny that’s happening in this country, stand up against Donald Trump, and stand up for democracy together and save our democracy and do what’s right for all of us. Not just for some of us, not just for some of us with money, but for all of us,” said Laci Lough.
- The rally lasted from roughly 12 to 1 pm today, with many wearing yellow and blue to show support for Ukraine, and their outrage at the state of the meeting President Trump had yesterday with Vladimir Zelenskyy.
- KOLO 8 has reached out to congressman Amodei for comment and is awaiting a response.
KRNV: Northern Nevadans return to Congressman Amodei’s office to protest
Key points:
- Hundreds of northern Nevadans once again took to the streets in front of Congressman Mark Amodei’s Reno office for a protest on Saturday.
- Today marked Indivisible Northern Nevada’s third rally outside Amodei’s office since early February.
- Protesters expressed their displeasure for the actions of the Trump Administration, and Amodei’s perceived lack of communication with his constituents since the President took office.
- “We’re looking for our congressman to have an explanation, to have answers. It’s not too much to ask of people in Reno and his constituents in rural Nevada,” said Virginia Larmore, an Indivisible Northern Nevada member. “He’s supposed to be a representative in a representative government. And how is he supposed to represent us if he’s not present?”
- Earlier in the day, a smaller group of 15 locals held a protest near the city’s Tesla dealership. They were unable to protest Elon Musk in front of the building, as there was no public space available.
- “Elon Musk has just decided that he was going to buy his way into the White House, which he has. (Elon) partnered up with the President and now he’s running a rampage through our social programs,” said Marcus, a protester.
- The 53-year-old is an employee of Medicaid, and said he feels concerned every day.
- “I might not have a job tomorrow. You don’t know what’s coming down the pike. And when we sit at home and we hear the news continuously change in a negative way, it’s just very frustrating,” Marcus said.
