Cantril School is arguably the most architecturally significant historic building in Castle Rock. When the Town of Castle Rock learned the building was being sold, it became apparent that the Town could help preserve local history while providing a new space for programs and community use.

The Douglas County School District recently declared the property as “surplus,” allowing the sale of the school on the open market. Town Council and the School District Board of Education on Tuesday, Nov. 15, approved a purchase contract for the property. The Town now enters into a 60-day due diligence period before the purchase can be finalized. 

The Town is holding an open house for the community to share ideas for the potential uses of Cantril School, located at 312 Cantril St. The open house is from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, in the school’s auditorium.

Cantril School opened as Castle Rock Elementary School in 1897 and continues to serve Douglas County School District. The property was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in 1984 but does not hold any local historic designations.
