From: Town Of ErieStolen Vehicles
It's old news that all of Colorado is facing a surge of auto thefts. Recently, we've been asked, "Is it happening in Erie?"
Yes, yes, vehicle theft is on the rise. While we are encouraged by our recovery rate of these vehicles, we know that those recoveries don't mean a victim's stress, anguish, and sense of security is restored.
What is Erie doing?
We are focusing on prevention. This third quarter, the Erie Police Department piloted automatic license plate readers in various locations around Town. The data has informed officers of activities that would not otherwise be available. In the past 30 days, officers have been alerted to 59 occurrences of a reported stolen vehicle license plate traveling within Erie (some could be duplicates). Remember the Knast is Fast story? That arrest was made possible thanks to an automated license plate reader! Much more to come on this. For now, please lock your vehicles, and keep valuables out of sight.
Did you know the highest volume of auto theft happens on Mondays and Fridays? Discover more at the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority webpage and take a look at the 2022 information to date about the occurrences of vehicle theft in Erie.
As always, to report suspicious activity, please call the dispatch non-emergency number at 303-441-4444 or 911 if the event is happening now or in emergencies.
