NEW MATTRESS COLLECTION POLICY
As of November 1, 2022, mattresses will no longer be allowed in the trash collection. New state rules require mattresses be kept out of the trash, so they can be recycled or donated for reuse. In order to comply, the Town of Hamilton will change the way it collects mattresses as of November 1, 2022.
Hamilton residents must purchase a “Mattress Bulk Sticker” by check from the Department of Public Works located at Hamilton Town Hall, 577 Bay Road, Hamilton, MA 01982, in the amount of $30.00 for each mattress or box spring. The program costs and grant opportunities will be reviewed annually.
The Hamilton DPW will provide Casella Waste the listing of addresses that have requested mattress pickup for every other Thursday, beginning on November 17. Residents not listed will not have their mattress collected.
Approximately 600,000 mattresses and box springs are discarded annually in the state, according to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection and more than 75% of mattress and box spring components can be easily disassembled and recycled. Mattresses also take up a lot of space in landfills. Separating them for recycling is better for the planet and reduces the need for additional landfills and municipal waste combustion facilities.

Reminder to all Residents about Trash and Compost Collection
COMPOST: Your Green Compost bin MUST remain out with your black Trash barrel in order for the trash to be picked up. If the Compost has been collected before the Trash, do not remove the Green Compost bin from the curb, even if the weather is windy or rainy, until all trash has been taken. The people on the Trash truck do not know that the compost has already been collected; they will not pick up the trash if the Green bin is not there and instead will leave an orange violation sticker on the Trash barrel.
Residents that share a driveway with other households are advised to paint their house number on both the black Trash barrel and the Green Compost bin and place these containers next to each other.
TRASH OVERFLOW: The lid on the black Trash barrel must be able to close, no overflow aka "snow coning" allowed. The people on the Trash truck will not take the trash and instead will leave an overflow sticker. Blue bags must be purchased for excess trash; these are sold at Crosby's, Hamilton Convenience, and Aubuchon. Thank you.
This policy, approved by the Select Board on December 12, 2020, started on February 1, 2021. Read the Organics-Ban-policy here
