Norfolk is quiet in the days following the holidays, but that won't last long. First Selectman Matt Riiska is already gathering budget data for the Board of Finance, even as the town continues to recover from the November 5 gas spill. The big-ticket issue for this year: The long-planned upgrade of Maple Ave., which was heavily affected by the gas spill

Speed Petition Needs More Signatures
A petition is still circulating seeking lower speeds for vehicles traveling through the Botelle School zone. The effort grew out of the Economic Development Commission, which has sought speed restrictions there for some time. Read more.

Taxpayers wishing to appeal assessments on the October 2, 2022 Real Estate and/or Personal Property List, or the 2021 Supplemental Motor Vehicle List must make a written request to the Board of Assessment Appeals for a hearing. Read more.

Great Mountain Forest Begins Lecture Series
Great Mountain Forest begins its Winter Lecture Series Saturday, January 14, at 4:00 p.m. with a program at D.M. Hunt Library in Falls Village. Institute for American Indian Studies traditional storyteller Darlene Kascak, a Schaghticoke, and IAIS ecologist Susan Scherf, will present an interactive program examining how people can include “Etuaptmumk”—two-eyed seeing—in their daily lives. This concept refers to seeing the strengths of both Indigenous and Western knowledge. Register here.
"Rock Around the Clock" Saturday at Chapel
The Grantville Dawgs will host a "Rock Around the Clock" dance Saturday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Battell Chapel to help raise fund for restoration of the Church of Christ Congregational's steeple. The group offers a musical tour through time, giving participants a chance to learn dances from the 1950’s through the 1990’s. Participants should bring their own beverages and snacks. $20 suggested donation.
Library to Screen "The Proposal"
"The Proposal," a 2009 movie starring Ryan Reynolds, Sandra Bullock and Betty White, will be screened at the Norfolk Library Thursday, January 19, at 7:00 p.m. in honor of the late Betty White. Read more

The library will host a double-feature Teen Movie Night, while older audiences will enjoy a Music Among Neighbors evening with Trina Hamlin. Many older residents frequently assess their cognitive powers, worrying that every time they mislay their keys they are at the doorstep of dementia. The Norfolk Library will offer a virtual program giving tips to prevent cognitive decline.
