From: Des Moines Community PlayhouseDES MOINES, Iowa – State Treasurer Roby Smith reunited The Des Moines Playhouse with more than $300 through Great Iowa Treasure Hunt, the State’s only legitimate program for reuniting lost funds with individuals and businesses in Iowa. “I am delighted to reunite The Des Moines Playhouse with this money to help them continue their mission,” said Smith. “The theatre is an experience that can educate and inspire.”
The Playhouse is one of the U.S.’s largest and oldest producing theatres. Located in the heart of Des Moines since 1919, the theatre showcases a season of musicals, comedies, dramas and family shows. David Kilpatrick, Executive Director, accepted the check on behalf of the Des Moines Playhouse. “It was a wonderful surprise to discover funds that were ours but never claimed. It was almost like ‘free’ money,” said Kilpatrick. “The process was so easy, just a couple of forms and a little bit of patience. I’m grateful to the angel who sent me a note saying, ‘You have money in Great Iowa Treasure Hunt!’”
Each year, millions of dollars are turned over to the State Treasurer’s Office after financial institutions and businesses lose contact with the owner. Examples of unclaimed property include forgotten checking and savings accounts, stocks, uncashed checks, life insurance policies, utility refunds and safe deposit box contents. The Treasurer’s Office safeguards the assets and works to reunite them with the owner or rightful heir through Great Iowa Treasure Hunt.
Great Iowa Treasure Hunt has returned over $378 million, and over $521 million is waiting to be reunited with rightful owners. “This is a great reminder for all Iowa non-profits to search and see if they have unclaimed funds,” concluded Smith. “We are all partners in ensuring we look out for our performing arts in the community. Search today. You never know what is waiting to be found!”
Iowans and businesses in the state can search for their name at GreatIowaTreasureHunt.gov. It’s secure, free and easy to use. Connect with the Treasurer on Facebook, Instagram and X to stay up-to-date on all areas of the office.
