Meanwhile, a former classmate insists she bears no hard feelings toward him for his grade-school taunts when she was "Roly Poly Julia," but it becomes increasingly apparent that she has unfinished business with him. Director: Heiner Carow

Tanya and Philipp work together and are both dedicated teachers. They become close and move in together. Tanya is very much in love and gets pregnant. Things get complicated for Philipp when he meets Matthias, however, as they fall passionately in love. Philipp struggles with his identity and what to do; it is hard to overcome years of repressing his sexuality.

The first East German film on homosexuality, it was filmed in part on location at gay hangouts in East Berlin, including the Friedrichshain Volkspark and the gay bars Schoppenstube und Zum Burgfrieden in Prenzlauer Berg. A little gem is a scene with the famous East German trans activist Charlotte von Mahlsdorf.

Coming Out premiered the night the Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989. When the news broke that the border between East and West had been opened, the film was stopped and the audience was informed about the event taking place outside the cinema. The vast majority of the audience demanded to see the rest of the film before joining the masses outside.

Francis, a 30-year-old refugee, is the sole survivor of a boat that crossed the Mediterranean illegally from West Africa. When he wakes up on a beach in the south of Europe, he is determined to live a regular, decent life, but he winds up in present-day Berlin where a stateless person without a work permit is treated just as mercilessly. He initially resists an offer to deal drugs in Hasenheide Park, but then comes under the influence of Reinhold, his neurotic, sex-addicted pal, a drug dealer and human trafficker--born to destroy the people around him--who takes him in. When he meets club owner Eva and, after several dramatic experiences, escort girl Mieze, he feels he's found something for the first time, something he's never known before: a little bit of happiness.—Berlinale

1pm: Fritzi: Eine Wendewundergeschichte

FILM INFO

Runtime:    86 min

Director:    Matthias Bruhn
               Ralf Kukula

East Germany, 1989. Twelve-year-old Fritzi lovingly takes care of her best friend Sophie's little dog Sputnik, while Sophie's family is on summer vacation in Hungary. When Sophie doesn't come back, Fritzi and Sputnik set out in search of her. That adventures leads her into the Monday's demonstrations of Leipzig and towards the heavily-guarded boarde.

Historically accurate, authentic, and with lots of rich period detail and atmosphere, this moving animated movie for the whole family retells the story of the peaceful revolution of 1989 from a child's perspective. An entertaining and exciting tale of the Fall of the Wall, and of the people who were brave enough to change the world, which will make a lasting impression, not only on young viewers.

Based upon the book "Fritzi war dabei" by Hanna Schott and Gerda Raidt.

In 2003, his first year as the new conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, Sir Simon Rattle set out on an unusual project—in a bid to engage the community and expose classical music to people who otherwise might not be interested, Rattle joined forces with choreographer Royston Maldoom to stage a special performance of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring with a cast of 250 dancers recruited entirely from the city's public schools, none of whom had a previous background in classical dance or music. —TCM
