Universal City North Hollywood Chamber Of Commerce News - February 9, 2023

Clubs and Organizations

February 10, 2023

From: Universal City North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce

Welcome to another edition of "NoHo Strong," our Chamber's answer to the "weekly news!" We have another information-filled, interesting newsletter for you...and...want to make sure that we highlight our special "subject line," a beautiful quote by Dr. Moe Jemison. As we continue to honor "Black History Month," we thought we would use fantastic quotes from notable persons in Black History.

The beautiful thing about this quote is the fact that it was said by the first ever African-American woman to become an astronaut. Many children dream about going to space when they get older, but only a few will accomplish this dream. This quote highlights a major reason why this may be true: we often feel weighed down by what others think and by the stigma that the world and society puts on certain things. There have always been certain things that people view as unorthodox or out of ordinary. Before going into space, Dr. Jemison most likely had many opposers who told her that a Black woman going to space was not something that has ever happened or will ever happen. However, she remained steadfast and accomplished her goal while leaving us with an inspirational treasure through her words.

It's also Valentine's Day this Tuesday, February 14th...so if you've got some shopping or planning to do, you might want to get that done this weekend!

OK..time to get started on our weekly read...!!

A Word...Or Two...Or Three...

by ds stringer

CEO

While researching these fantastic candidates for "Back History Month," it became quite obvious that there were so many wonderful possibilities, it would be very difficult to choose.

But, we finally narrowed it down...finally.

The first candidate to highlight for "Black History Month" is Dr. James McCune Smith.

Dr. Smith was an American physician, apothecary, abolitionist, and author who was born in Manhattan. He was the first African American to hold a medical degree from the University of Glasgow in ScotlandHe has been called the foremost Black intellectual in the 19th-century US.Nov 29, 2021

Dr. Smith was born on April 18, 1813 in Manhattan, New York, NY

to parents who were former slaves.

His education came from African Free SchoolUniversity of Glasgow

He also was the first to own and operate a pharmacy in New York City.

A quite accomplished man who came from humble beginnings and achieved great things! A person I know you'd agree, that all Americans can admire and respect On behalf of the Universal City/North Hollywood Chamber of Commerce...
