Walz, Flanagan Announce Reappointment to the Public Utilities Commission

[ST. PAUL, MN] – Today, Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan announced the reappointment of Katie Sieben to serve as a commissioner and chair of the Public Utilities Commission (PUC). Governor Dayton appointed Sieben to the PUC in 2017, and Governor Walz appointed her as chair in 2019.

“I am excited to announce the reappointment of Chair Sieben to the Public Utilities Commission,” said Governor Walz. “Her expertise of all levels of state government and proven leadership skills will continue to benefit the Public Utilities Commission in its important work.”

“I am grateful to Chair Sieben for her continued service on the Public Utilities Commission,” said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan. “I look forward to what the commission will be able to accomplish on behalf of Minnesotans in the coming years.”

Governor Flanagan for this opportunity to continue serving Minnesotans on the Public Utilities Commission ,” said Chair Sieben. “I am proud of the transparent and inclusive approach that I have brought to the decision-making process and the ongoing work to shape the clean energy transition in our state.”

Prior to her service on the commission, Chair Sieben was a Minnesota state senator and state representative. She earned her B.A. from Colorado College and her M.P.A. from the Harvard Kennedy School. She was a University of Minnesota Humphrey Institute Policy Fellow and a recipient of the Bush Foundation Fellow Award. Additionally, she is a community faculty member and adjunct professor at Metro State University.

The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission regulates the electricity, natural gas, and telephone services industries in Minnesota—ensuring safe, reliable, and effective utility services. The PUC is a five member body with legislative and quasi-judicial functions.
