Club History:
The Amarillo North Lions Club began in 1954. It was chartered as Northeast Lions Club of Amarillo. The Charter President was O. A. (Steve) Stephens. In 1961, the Lions Hi-Plains Eye Bank was chartered. The seven presidents of the seven Amarillo Lions Clubs were the original directors of the new Eye Bank. President Leonard Steger of the Amarillo North Club was one of the original executive officers of the Eye Bank. Lion O. A. (Steve) Stephens was the first District Governor from the club serving in 1963-1964. Lion George Edward (Ed) Thames served as District Governor in 1982-1983. Lion Richard D. (Rick) Garrett served as District Governor 1992-1993. Lion Earl Long served as District Governor 1995-1996.
The members of Amarillo North have always been very active at the District level. In 1998-1999, Lion Rick Garrett served as President of the Past District Governors Association of Texas. Of the current 18 members of the Amarillo North Lions Club, two have been inducted into the Texas Lions Hall of Fame, PDG Rick Garrett(1999) and PDG Earl Long (2005). Ed Thames was President of the Eye Bank Association of Texas during 1981-1982.
