In fact, started in New York City May 4, 1836, the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) is the oldest Fraternal Charitable Catholic Organization still operating in America. Our Charter states we need to help those less fortunate than ourselves.
We support many local charities donating our time, talents and fundraising. We support Food Pantries through our Action on Hunger project, Veterans through organizations like the Comfort Warrior, the Wounded Warrior Project and more. In addition, we promote Irish Art, Sports and Culture. We are part of planning, supporting and organizing the Saint Patrick's Day Parade.
We collect food and clothing for Saint Ignatius and Holy Family outreach and Human Resources centers. Please donate if you can. Our members are devoted Scout Leaders, Coaches, Businessmen, Law enforcement and from all walks of life.
One of the AOH projects we are working on is a Monument dedicated to immigrants, especially any of those forced from their homeland due to Hunger, Religion, War, oppression etc. The monument will stand as a beacon for years to come of the work accomplished by their proud descendents who made this Hicksville and the entire country what it is today!
The A.O.H. of Nassau County sponsors a FEIS our "ANNUAL IRISH FESTIVAL" here in Nassau County.
It is on the third Sunday every September for more than 42 years. In 2013, there were over 550 Irish step dancers competing, 12 Pipe Band competitions and 19 individual professional Pipers and Drummers.
On September 21, 2014, it is again located on the Hofstra Campus for the third year. There are Irish Singing, Crafts, Baking Art, a children's area and Vendors and more.
Being Irish means much more than just wearing a green shirt, celebrating Saint Patrick's Day or raising a pint of stout. There is a great history of a proud and determined people. There is a section of our website providing links to historical information about the Irish and their culture.
