Our Mission
The Historical Society, organized in 1998, is composed of individuals interested Aracoma in preserving the historical component of the former Aracoma High School located at Cole Branch Road in Logan County. The Society's aim is to preserve the building as a historical site and to utilize it for public functions. The Logan County Landmark Commission placed Aracoma High School on the list of Registered Logan County Landmarks. Actions have been initiated to place Aracoma High School on the national Registry as well. The Society will collect, preserve and display such items as will keep fresh in our memory the names and accomplishments of those who passed through these halls during years of segregation.
The following have been envisioned as functions for the facility: To serve as a...
Visitors Center - Visitors to Logan County need a visitors' center which would provide them information, calendar of events, maps, and directories.
Historical Center - Areas of the facility would be devoted to museum history of the former high school. Further space would be devoted to a museum of local culture.
Learning Center - There is a high rate of illiteracy in Logan County. The explosion of knowledge is ever-increasing, yet there is a large segment of the population of Logan County who will be left behind in the 21st Century. The learning center would be committed to helping people meet some of life's challenges with some interactive literacy programs, a comprehensive G.E.D.
preparatory program, educational programs, and job skills training.
Recreation Center - There is a plan for part of the facility to be used
for recreation for all ages.
Public Meeting Area - Available public meeting space for civic groups is somewhat limited in Logan County. This facility would afford
space that could be utilized to meet these needs.
Fellowship Kitchen - A dining room equipped with dining tables, chairs and a commercial kitchen which would be rented out to interested groups for social occasions such as wedding receptions, anniversaries, cooking schools, guest lecture events, would be offered for public use.
