About Us
In our ever-changing world of modern technology, Art L. DuPont remains a link to the past with his special interest in the old Spanish Masters. An ongoing search for simplicity and refinement never ends with his constant studies of human movement or the quietness of his still lifes. Art, he indicates is a visual expression of ideas and thoughts and how we project them can display a mood, be it happy or sad.
Each painting or sketch is a lesson in understanding, not only ourselves, but everything and everyone we embrace. He feels art has to be reduced to its simplest form, avoiding mental as well as physical confusion. To achieve this simplicity, three elements must be kept in mind: form, value and subtleties.
His art training began at an early age when he discovered the magic a pencil could produce. His search took him to Western State College for a B.A. in Art, where he studied under Don Radovich in 1971. His studies continued at the Arizona School of Art in 1973-74 and then on the Art Students League in New Your City for two and a half years. It was here that he met and studied with internationally acclaimed artist David Leffel, whose influence is evident. He encouraged him to continue the interest in Spanish and Flemish Masters. With this interest, his focus on art took him to Europe where he copied works at the National Gallery in London, the Louvre in Paris and the Prado in Madrid. He also spent four months on the island of Mallorca, Spain and went on further excursions to the Caribbean to learn more about different peoples and their cultures.
Art has not only mastered the brush, but is also a master at drawing. His pencil drawings are exquisite. He studied at the Art Students League under Dr. Robert Beverly Hale, who was considered the foremost authority on the human body.
Art carries a drawing book with him wherever he goes. Over the past thirty years, he has accumulated over thirty drawing books filled with drawings of his many travels and everyday life situations. While working at the Climax Mine he produced thousands of drawings of miners. He sketches in church, at sporting events, the theatre, on the subway, etc. Any place or event that people congregate, Art is anxious to capture their expressions and gestures. One prominent New York artist told him that he is the best draftsman he has ever known.
In his small studio in Leadville, he continues his quest to fine tune his art interests. His drawing expertise is very evident in the designs he creates for a T-shirt business that he and his wife, Mary, a photographer, created seven years ago. His designs cover topics that vary from the Colorado Mountains, mining, wrestling, foot races, buildings, family reunions, etc.
