History of ACC
In 1991, more than sixty children auditioned for the selection of nineteen to sing in an opera production. The process of preparing children to sing and the opportunity it presented them sparked interest and enthusiasm to continue such a cultural education and learning experience. The cultural community, the parents of the nineteen children, other interested parents, and children who desired the benefits of excellent vocal training and performance exposure asked for the continuance of Augusta’s first community chorale for children. A drive to establish a permanent auditioned children’s choral group brought about the beginning of Augusta Children’s Chorale in September, 1991. ACC adopted the following mission statement:
Augusta Children’s Chorale offers boys and girls with unchanged voices opportunities for musical and personal development through excellence in singing in a diverse chorale organization.
Augusta Children’s Chorale established itself as a non-profit organization with a board of directors to govern, regulate, and direct the growth and future of the group. With a goal to capture the talents of children who show an exceptional aptitude in music and to further their education in music (choral art in particular), ACC rapidly acquired the distinction of successfully training and providing opportunities for children with elevated levels of vocal talent. In 1998, ACC expanded its program by adding a preparatory choir for young singers whose potentials could be boosted by substantive training in fundamentals. The two-tiered program enables advanced singers to receive in-depth training with more difficult music and to develop greater professional performance skills.
