The Bangor Area High School, in partnership with its community, will provide a positive educational environment that prepares life-long learners to achieve excellence and success as contributing members of society.

Bangor’s first high school building was completed in 1882 and graduated its class from there in 1885. The building was destroyed by fire in 1919.

About 1914, the high school consisted only of grades seven to eleven. Then in 1914, the first twelfth grade was established and graduated.

In 1927, a new structure was erected at a cost of one quarter million dollars, which at that time, was considered a fantastic amount. When additional space was needed, the Garfield Building was repaired, thereby giving the school an "L-Shape". In 1935, two additional rooms were added.

Construction of the original 10-12 high school building was started on July 16, 1961, and completed in February 1962. The first classes in the building were held on April 2, 1962; and the new auditorium housed its first graduation on June 14, 1962. In 1999, a major expansion program was completed doubling the size of the school and allowing ninth grade to move in forming a comprehensive 9-12 high school. Bangor Area High School was re-dedicated on May 22, 1999.

Increased enrollments and the need to expand the program resulted in the construction of a junior high, the Five Points Elementary and the DeFranco School during the 70’s and 80’s. This building program has phased out the district’s neighborhood schools – Portland, East Bangor, McKinley, Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Bangor Elementary. The fine facilities provided by the Bangor Area School District stand as testimony to our community’s commitment to quality education.

In 1954, Bangor Area Joint School System was formed and was comprised of three district – Bangor, Roseto, and Lower Mt. Bethel. In 1958, a six-district jointure was formed, adding Portland, Upper Mt. Bethel and Washington Township to the original three. Bangor retained its six-district status for four years until 1962, when East Bangor became the seventh district. In 1964, the seven-district jointure was reorganized to form the Bangor Area School District.

Bangor Area High School offers an expanded program with a wide variety of curricula from which to choose a course. BAHS was evaluated in 2001 and it’s again on the accredited list of Secondary Schools of the Middle Atlantic States.
