History:

‹Prior to the 1960's, there was not a strong "Baptist" influence in Morgan County, WV. It was distressing enough that Robert Winstead, a regular visitor to the town from Lorton, VA, wrote to the Religious Herald of Virginia urging Virginia Baptists to do something about it. Over the next few years, residents of Morgan County who had "Baptist ties" started a letter campaign. It took four years, but in 1968 action began to happen.

In March of 1968, John Snedden, Director of Missions in West Virginia, met with a group in the home of Mike and Nancy Pentoney to start laying out plans for a Baptist Mission in Berkeley Springs.

On May 8th, 1969, Calvary Baptist Church of Morgantown, West Virginia officially planted the Berkeley Springs Baptist Chapel. Mike and Nancy Pentoney, along with their son Page, joined Calvary Baptist to serve as an "anchor family" for the new church plant. An "old fashinoned tent revival" was held in July of 1969. Eleven people made decisions to follow Christ and joined the Berkeley Baptist Chapel, including Lyne S. Keenan, who is still active in the church today. Plans were quickly made to rent a building on Fairfax St. (current Welcome Center and Chamber of Commerce) and services began regularly meeting in August of 1969.

On Aug. 1, 1970, David McCall (picture to the right) was called as the first Pastor of Berkeley Springs Baptist Chapel. On January 10th, 1971, Berkeley Springs Baptist Chapel was officially constituted as Berkeley Baptist Church. In the fall of 1972, the congregation purchased 17 acres of land off Winchester Grade Rd (Rt. 13) for $10,000.

In February of 1976, the congregation had their first service in the present day sanctuary. Over the years the church grew and the mortgage on the building was officially paid for by February of 1988.

Through the years, Berkeley Baptist Church has waxed and waned, just like any other organization. 10 men have served as Pastor of Berkeley Baptist Church since Rev. McCall. One man, Rev. Everett Powell, has served twice: 1987-1993 and again from 2012-2014 when he retired. In January of 2015, Berkeley Baptist Church called its 10th Pastor (not counting Rev. Powell twice), Rev. Joseph N. Giles, Jr.

Berkeley Baptist Church is located at 172 Winchester Grade Rd. Berkeley Springs, WV 25411. We are affiliated with the Blue Ridge Baptist Association of the Mid Atlantic, the West Virginia Convention of Southern Baptists, and the Southern Baptist Convention.
