History

Bethany Christian Assembly was founded in 1910 with services held the Everett Pentecostal Mission located at 2920 Broadway. This ministry was of Scandinavian origin and grew to include English speaking services pioneered by C. G. Carlson, Pastor Rob Carlson’s great grandfather.In 1923, the congregation moved to 2922 Rockefeller where a preamble for the new congregation was organized. Soon thereafter, Reverend E. O. Roebeck was called to be the pastor and coordinated the planning of a building program for the newly formed Bethany Temple. On January 30, 1925, construction commenced at 26th & Oakes, a property that cost $3,500. On June 28, 1925, Bethany temple was dedicated.Reverend C.E. Butterfield was called as pastor in 1928. In 1932, the first missionary support was raised for overseas ministry. Bethany Temple became affiliated with the General Council of the Assemblies of God in 1934 and became incorporated in 1937. In 1939, Bethany Temple received a deed and clear title to the church property and immediately set plans to remodel the facility. In 1947, plans were prepared for building the Sunday School annex.

Rev. C. E. Butterfield moved from Bethany Temple to become the president of Northwest College in 1949.Reverend Maynard S. Oss became the new pastor and served faithfully for seven years. In 1951, the first organ was installed in Bethany Temple. A building was erected across the alley for Sunday School expansion in 1953.In 1956, Reverend W. F. Morton was elected pastor and served faithfully until 1960. In 1960, the Hartford Assembly, branch church of Bethany, was granted church sovereignty.In 1962, Reverend E. A., Born became Bethany Temple’s pastor and faithfully served unto 1980. In 1964 the Mukilteo Assembly branch church of Bethany Temple, was granted church sovereignty. In 1972, the fellowship hall was constructed and the Temple Day Care was instituted. In 1977, property was purchased for a new building complex at Cedar and Everett Avenue. Pastor Born was elected Assistant Superintendent of the Northwest District in 1980. In January of 1981 Reverend Rollin J. Carlson was called to Bethany Temple as Pastor. Easter Sunday, April 19, 1981, the ground-breaking service was held on the new property. Construction commenced immediately.

Reverend Chang Hyo Cheh became the pastor of Bethany Korean Church in 1981. In 1982, the name Bethany Temple was enlarged to the current name Bethany Christian Assembly and Reverend Randy D. Lindsey became the pastor of Bethany Deaf Assembly. The congregation moved into the gymnasium of the new building in January 1983, preceded by Rainbow Children’s Center occupying their space in the new facility. On May 19, 1985, opening services were held in the new sanctuary. Pastor Rollin Carlson was elected District Secretary -Treasurer in April 1995.On May 9, 1995, Pastor Rob Carlson succeeded his father and was elected Senior Pastor of Bethany Christian Assembly. He became the 4th generation Pentecostal preacher to fill the BCA pulpit since his grandfather founded the church 85 years earlier. Rob’s grandfather, Reuben Carlson, who became District Superintendent of the Northwest District, was Bethany’s evangelist years earlier.For over 85 years, Bethany Christian Assembly has ministered in the city of Everett and a spiritual impact has been felt around the world. The testimony of that fact is the dedicated ministry of all who have shared and continue to share, the ministry responsibility and burden for World Evangelization. This testimony is recognized in commitment of time, talent, testimony & treasure.
