Mission

The Brothers of the Poor is a public charity organization. At this time, its main purpose is to care for the Tsunami orphans and the poorest and the most marginalized families devastated by the December 2004 Tsunami.

Care and welfare of the orphans created by the December 2004 Tsunami.

-Help feed, clothe, and provide housing for the tsunami orphans in eastern Sri-Lanka.
-Provide housing and other minimum essentials for the orphans daily living.
-Provide needed assistance such as rice, sugar, flour and other essentials to the nuns and the priests who are caring for the orphans.
-Conduct evening classes for the tsunami children to keep them occupied in the evening. This also functions as therapy.
-Provide tuition assistance to the tsunami children preparing for the Cambridge exam in preparation for the job market.

Help the poorest people who have lost everything during Tsunami

-Assist as much as possible with their daily needs.
-Help rebuild the damaged houses in the areas where no other NGOs are working.
-Provide building materials to construct two-room houses for the families who are selected by the local committee.

Provide assistance to the schools with hostels

-Provide some financial assistance to the schools which are housing tsunami orphans.
-Help them obtain school supplies at the lowest cost possible.
-Help them obtain computers and other teaching aids to enhance their curriculum.
-Provide some assistance to buy school supplies and uniforms for the orphans

Vision

Establish programs to support the orphans until they are 18 years of age.

-Find ways to get these orphans adopted by local families or international families.
-Provide financial assistance for them to live a comfortable life and attend school through high school.
-Provide an opportunity to attend trade school for those who are not interested in or who are unable to continue in formal schooling.

Find ways for the orphans to receive funding for another 13 years.
(The youngest orphan is 6 years of age as of August 2005)

-Establish a trust account that will generate sufficient interest that they can be self reliant.
-Establish contacts with the local business establishments to become partners in training students for their job markets.
-Solicit educational opportunities with scholarships for the talented students.

Plan for them to function in the event BOP charity organization can not provide funding assistance.

-Establish a MOU with the Bishop of Batticaloa to assume responsibilities for these orphans.
-Provide the Bishop with all the remaining funds to help him take care of these children.
-Transfer all the lines of communication that were established by the BOP.
