Burns Junior High (grades 7-9) was established in 1976. In 1990, the Cleveland County School System was reorganized and Burns Junior became a middle school (grades 6-8).

BMS presently serves approximately 1100 students and features 50 classrooms, a chorus and a band room, a complete gymnasium facility, a theater, eight computer labs, and a large commons area.
