Cat Haven is a non-profit feline welfare organization in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Established in 1999, we provide shelter, care and adoption to homeless cats in our community. We also promote the routine sterilization of cats and kittens to reduce the population of unwanted felines on the streets in our community.
As a volunteer for Cat Haven, you can have a direct impact on the lives of homeless and needy cats and kittens in our care. Please review the brief descriptions of the available volunteer opportunities, and select those of interest to you. After reviewing, you can sign-up online to become a volunteer or foster parent and get started helping the cats and kittens in our community! Cat Haven representatives will provide instructions and training prior to your volunteer participation.
Foster Parent: Provide a safe and loving home environment for our cats and kittens. This may involve kitties that require medical care, need a break from the shelter, or need special attention to help them become adoptable pets.
Saturday Morning Cleanings at the Shelter: Socialize with fellow volunteers and the kitties while ensuring the environment is sanitized and disinfected. This prevents the spread of disease and keeps the cats in our care healthy and ready for adoption. (Great for service hours)
Adoption Center Caretaker (PetSmart and Petco): Provide daily care of all of the cats at our offsite adoption centers. This includes cleaning of cages, providing food and water, monitoring the health of each cat, and providing socialization for individual cats. (18 and older)
Adoption Counselor: Builds relationship with potential adopters and assists them in finding cats that are a good match for their home and lifestyle. This includes educating adopters on Cat Haven's guidelines and completing applications and other related paperwork. Volunteers may also assist with set-up and/or take down of adoption materials at off-site locations. (18 and older)
Shelter Caretaker: Provides a nurturing, clean, and comfortable temporary home for our cats prior to adoption. This includes cleaning of cat rooms, providing food and water, giving medications when needed, monitoring the health of each cat, and providing socialization for the cats. This position requires a regular weekly commitment: the same day each week and either morning or evening shift. (18 and older)
Cat Cuddlers: Provides for socialization of the cats and kittens at our shelter. This includes petting, holding, brushing, playing, and talking to our kitties. Cuddlers create adaptable, adoptable kitties.
Daily Shelter Support: Cleans kitty items that accumulate during the week: carriers, bowls, litter boxes, laundry, toys, etc. Cleans empty cages to prepare for incoming residents and makes time for some cat cuddling. Other duties may include Pet Transportation.
Pet Transporter: Provides safe, reliable transportation for our kitties. This may involve trips to or from the vet, or one of our off-site adoption centers.
Fundraising/Special Events: Assists with planning and carrying out special events (holiday open house, annual gala, etc.). Volunteers also interact with event attendees, assist with decorations and coordination of the events.
Phone Message/Email Attendants: Reviews phone and/or email messages that come into Cat Haven. Forwards the messages to the appropriate contact person (Volunteer, Adoption, Foster, General Inquiries, etc.)
Website Team: Maintains the website and Facebook page for our organization. This includes, but is not limited to, posting articles and special events, assuring the site content is updated regularly, and tracks web traffic.
L.S.U. Spay Day: Help to facilitate the flow of animals through the clinic. Other duties may include animal registration, helping with meals for volunteers, set-up and/or take-down, and cleaning up when Spay Day concludes.Apply at www.cathaven.org
