Christ Covenant History

Christ Covenant Metropolitan Community Church was founded on Easter Sunday in May of 1992, when twelve people gathered for prayer. Christ Covenant MCC was chartered by the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches in 1994.

We began worship services at Memorial Bend Office Park in Stone Mountain, GA. With a mission to build nurturing community among a diversity of people, with a conscious desire to develop worship and programs that explore and re frame traditional Christian doctrine in light of feminist liberation theologies; with aspirations to offer meaningful, creative worship; and with conviction that ministries of the church have both inward and outward focus we rapidly out grew our ability to further expand this space. In August 1996, we moved into the present church building that was purchased from Antioch AME. The building was built in 1965 and includes a sanctuary with beautiful stained glass windows, a three-room office suite, a library, classroom space, parish hall, kitchen and rest rooms.

The Rev. Glenna Shepherd served as founding pastor. Under her leadership Christ Covenant reached a membership of 250 with over two hundred in weekly attendance. Systems and structures were carefully created, equipping lay leaders and providing for the programmatic and pastoral development of the congregation. In 1995 Marshall/Grant Ministries became an affiliate ministry of Christ Covenant. In 1999 Our Hope MCC in Athens GA, USA was founded as a parish extension of Christ Covenant.

Rev. Shepherd’s departure in September 2000 was followed by interim pastor, Rev. Ken Erkle, who in turn was followed by the Rev. Renne Shawver, who left early in 2005. Christ Covenant is now completing an interim pastor process under the leadership of Rev. Chris Glaser. Rev. Glaser began as our interim pastor in June, 2005, and will serve until October, 2006.
