About

The Citizen Jane Film Festival, an intimate festival celebrating and showcasing the work of female filmmakers from around the world takes place in downtown Columbia, Missouri and features some of the best in independent film making. CJFF grew out of a collaboration with Stephens College, one of the oldest and most respected women's colleges in the country. Since 2004, Stephens has invited female filmmakers to the college as a part of the Citizen Jane Lecture Series. In 2008, Citizen Jane Film Festival premiered and the festival has grown by almost 50% each year after. Citizen Jane Film Festival is well known for being a diverse international film festival and for supporting emerging and established filmmakers.

According to the Celluloid Ceiling, In 2012 women comprised only 9% of all directors working on the top 250 domestic grossing films. CJFF tackles the underrepresentation of women in the film industry head on by creating a community that engages in lively discussions featuring the filmmakers, workshops, and one-of-a-kind parties. We believe that through the support of avid audiences and fellow filmmakers we can ultimately change these dismal statistics and create a better future for all of us.We invite filmmakers and film lovers to come join us for a creativity retreat and a chance to connect with our amazingly supportive audiences.

CJFF has played host to films and filmmakers as diverse as Lena Dunham's Tiny Furniture, Margaret Brown and her film "The Order of Myths", Christine Vachon, Julia Reichert and Barbara Hammer and every year we seek to help put one more crack in the celluloid ceiling.
