Athens is Classic. Southern. Character. and has been since incorporating in 1818 before Alabama became a state.  As our city has grown, it has maintained these traits. That is most evident in Downtown Athens and around The Square. In Athens, going to "The Square" is a place to make memories. It's the place to find the perfect outfit, enjoy an upside banana split, or become mesmerized by the toy train winding through a window display at the hardware store. The historic Limestone County Courthouse is the backdrop for parades, high school pep rallies, storytelling, and art events and is surrounded by a retail area to shop for the unique and dine on divine cuisine. 

You will find events distinctive to Athens, such as the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention and Athens Grease Festival. You will discover notable stories, such as a Union Civil War fort where runaway slaves fought and were captured and later received an education, telling us the saga of slave, to soldier, to student.
