Mitchell is a city of around five thousand located in Lawrence County in beautiful south central Indiana. Mitchell is a true crossroads of Southern Indiana as it is located right on the crossroads of S.R. 37 and S.R. 60 which are two of Southern Indiana's main highways. We also have two major rail lines that cross near the middle of the City and which had much to do with the founding of Mitchell. We have a very rich heritage dating back to our founding in 1853. We are proud of our community and all it has to offer. Mitchell is the boyhood home of Virgil I. "Gus" Grissom who was one of the Original Seven Astronauts and a true pioneer in space. Gus was the Unites States second man in space. Our city hall has a memorial dedicated to Gus featuring a large limestone rocket. Spring Mill State Park which is less than three miles east of Mitchell has a Grissom Memorial that features items such as Gus's Gemini 3 spacecraft the "Molly Brown." Gus's boyhood home is being renovated to create a museum in honor of him as well.
Mitchell's historic downtown has a lot to offer featuring several shops with antiques and unique items of interest. You will find it well worth your time to stop in and visit. Area attractions abound such as Spring Mill which is only minutes away and is something you must not pass up if you are in the area. The historic Grist Mill and village will take you back in times and you will enjoy the meandering creek and lovely trees and flowers all through the park as well as an extensive trail system. World famous events like the Kentucky Derby, Indianapolis 500 and Brickyard 400 can all be reached in a couple of hours times. Bloomington Indiana with Indiana University is only about a half an hour away and is a cultural treasure in and of itself. We treasure our small town values and spirit of community pride and would give that up for anything, but sometimes we like to venture out and its only a short trip to do so.
While we cherish our rich history and small town values we realize that we must prepare for the future and as Gus did not just reach for the stars but go to the stars. We try to keep our city beautiful with programs such as being a Tree City USA city, yet at the same time providing some infrastructure to an Internet Service Provider so he can offer Wireless Internet throughout the city and surrounding area. The Mitchell Memorial Playground started as a dream based on Riley's Park in Salem Indiana. With a lot of hard work that dream became reality. It was designed by Leather's and Associates based on input from the children of our community and what they wanted it to have. The materials came from donations and the labor came from the community. The park was built by all volunteers and in a weeks time. It was a truly amazing project and could not have happened without a lot of great people willing to help. Mitchell is very proud to have an excellent school system. We have many excellent youth sport activities in Mitchell as well. And we have not forgotten our Seniors as we have a Senior Citizens Center as part of our Community Building and they have many activities.
