About Us:

The City of Wellford is situated in the western part of Spartanburg County South Carolina. Wellford is possibly one of the oldest communities in Spartanburg County with roots extending back to 1740 when settlers from Pennsylvania came to clear forests into farmland and for the abundance of wild game. Homes built in the first half of the 18th century still stand today. Fort Prince was built around 1760 and served as protection from Indian raids and was the site of a Revolutionary War skirmish. Wellford was originally called Beech Springs Township. It held that name until 1876 when the Danville-Richmond Railroad was cut through the community. A depot and water tower was built to service a general store and post office already in operation as well as the passing trains.

Wellford was officially established in 1881 and was given the name "Wellford" from the railroad Director C.P.A. Wellford. Several years later, merchandise shops such as Ballenger's, Query's, Burnett's, Drummond's and the Vera Pittman Grocery, a cotton gin, a general store (Vernon's Store), a blacksmith shop and a one-room rail was built near the water depot.  The Wellford Bank was also built and flourished until the great depression struck in the 1930's. Most historic documents and photographs were destroyed in several fires. Mr. J.R. Snoddy owned the first automobile in Wellford. It was a 1909 model. One of Wellford's most historic institutions of learning was the Sunny Graded School which was chartered by a group of freed slaves in 1881. The oldest church in Wellford is the Wellford Presbyterian Church which was established in approximately 1833 followed by Wellford Baptist Church (1877)

Today, Wellford has experienced enormous growth. The current administration, directed by Mayor Patricia Watson, has set goals for the growth of this area. We are focusing our effort on improving the quality of life in our City by bringing much needed services. July 7,2014, we started curbside household garbage collection. Our goal for next year is to establish yard waste and leaf removal.
