Our History
Evans County
General Clement Anselm Evans The county was established from the counties of Bulloch and Tattnall on August 11, 1914, by Act of the Georgia General Assembly. The county was named for General Clement Anselm Evans, a lawyer who graduated from the Law School of Augusta, Georgia. He was in the Georgia State Senate in 1859, and served in the Confederate Army through the War Between The States. He was acting Brigadier Major-General in the Army of Northern Virginia at the time of Lee's surrender. He was an author as well as an eminent Methodist minister.
Claxton-Evans County Chamber of Commerce
Our office is conveniently located at the intersection of Highways 280 and 301. The chamber building has been noted as the first brick home built in Claxton in the early 1940s. The original design of the building remains the same, boasting of 4 fireplaces, pantry, sunroom, twelve-foot ceilings, original door and window casings, french door, as well as 4 foot wall chimes. The ambience of this building makes for a most enjoyable place to work or visit.
