In November 1981, a group began to pray about and discuss the possibility of planting a PCA church in or near Harleysville. The following May, the session of the Lansdale Presbyterian Church announced a meeting for "all persons interested in starting a PCA church in the Harleysville area." Four months later, on September 12,1982, Covenant Presbyterian Church held its first public service of worship at the Peter Becker Community in Harleysville. The organizing pastor, the Rev. David J. Brewer, was called to be the regular pastor, and Covenant became a particular church on April 24, 1983. The Peter Becker Community and Covenant both understood that the church would build as soon as possible, probably within two or three years. The congregation purchased property, and began to develop a building plan. In June, 1988, pastor Brewer resigned, and the Rev. George S. Clark and the Rev. Frederic C. Putnam served as interim co-pastors while the congregation searched for a new pastor. After a two-year search, the Rev. Stephen B. Ford was installed as CPC's second pastor on June 3, 1990.

Although the property had been fully paid for and plans laid, the congregation could not raise the funds to build. The church sold the property and with the proceeds voted on January 22, 1995, to purchase a new site in Vernfield. Construction began at the end of December 1996, and Covenant worshiped for the first time in its own building on July 27, 1997. Vacation Bible school met in August. In 2000, the session of Covenant decided that the amount of work had become too great for one pastor. The session called the Rev. John P. Muhlfeld to be an assistant pastor at Covenant. Pastor Muhlfeld was installed at Covenant on May 15, 2000. He was later called by the congregation to assume the role of associate pastor as of January 1, 2001. Upon the retirement of Pastor Ford, Pastor Muhlfeld was called as senior pastor on January 1, 2005. Then, on August 15, 2005, the Rev. Paul D.
