Eagle Academy’s purpose is to enhance success for at risk students not functioning in a traditional classroom setting. The 10 to 1 ratio of students to teacher increases opportunities for powerful learning experiences and positive relationship building. Instead of a one dimensional learning environment that only rewards a particular set of skills and knowledge, this kind of approach to learning gives students the opportunity to express themselves in a variety of ways and builds upon their many different strengths and talents. Instead of relying solely on the traditional approach centered on teacher-directed learning where students memorize a predetermined set of information, students are encouraged to search and discover meanings from enriching environments and activities set up by educational facilitators rather then a bland teacher’s lecture and/or boring worksheet exercises. In Eagle Academy, all the stakeholders of the school community staff, students, parents, administrators, businesses and community representatives work together to bring these kind of powerful learning experiences to all students. Students of all ability levels are provided with challenging learning situations that allow them to contribute while encouraging them to achieve new proficiencies. We discuss, reflect, and practice this educational process daily.
