About Us
EAC's Discovery Park Campus will inspire people to act responsibly from an informed awareness of and respect for our environment and the interdependence of people and nature. A comprehensive environmental education program was developed by EAC Biology Instructor David Henson to achieve this goal. This program has since won the "Governor's Pride in Arizona Award" and was approved by the Arizona Advisory Council on Environmental Education (AACEE) as a provider for its Fast Track Grant program.
Eastern Arizona College's Discovery Park Campus has a restored natural habitat. When Discovery Park was established in 1995, the area below the observatory was a natural wash (Dead Man's Wash). Over time the area had lost much of its native vegetation and non-native plants such as salt cedar had covered much of the area. Mick St. John was the area maintenance and wildlife manager at the time. Mick explored the possibility of restoring the area to its natural environment. This process took years. Mick first needed to remove the non-native vegetation and then plant the native vegetation.
