Mission:
As members of Edgefield United Methodist Church, we believe God is glorified through our commitments to the Church, prayer, presence, gifts and service. We believe that the gospel of Jesus Christ is revealed best as we display a persistent love for each other as members of the body of Christ and as we share that gospel with our community & world.

A Brief History of Edgefield United Methodist Church:

Edgefield Methodism is probably as old as Edgefield. Circuit riders conducted services at Edgefield Court House in the late 1790’s, and Francis Asbury, sent by John Wesley to the colonies in 1771, recorded in his journal visits to Edgefield in October, 1801 and November 1807.

The first Edgefield Methodist Church was at Pottersville, one mile north of the present town of limits, established about 1820. In 1831 the congregation moved closer to town, building a church on Buncombe Street near the Hansford Mims home. In 1841 Rev. Joseph Moore, whose portrait hand in our educational building, donated land, and a church was built where our parsonage now stands. The parsonage was on the corner of Main and Bacon streets.

In 1891 our present sanctuary was built. The 1841 church was converted into a parsonage, which was used until the present parsonage was built in 1957.

In 1981 a fire destroyed the educational building, which had been built shortly before 1950, and severely damaged the sanctuary. Our present educational building and the restoration of the sanctuary were completed in 1982. A part of the restoration was the stained glass windows in the sanctuary, each a memorial to loved ones given by family members of the congregation.

Our church is proud to have sent sons and daughters into active Christian service. June Hughes Nicholson was a missionary to China, and Jane Williams Etheridge was a missionary to Angola. Tim McClendon and George Boyd are went forth from Edgefield to pastor other Methodist churches of the South Carolina Conference.

Our congregation is active in mission and outreach services, led by the United Methodist Women, Rainbow Circle, United Methodist Men, and United Methodist Youth Fellowship. We have an active and talented choir which meets every Wednesday. Vacation Bible School is held every summer. Our Senior Adults are very active and enjoy fellowship time together. A prayer group meets every Sunday morning before Sunday School to pray for the needs of our church and community. Our Sunday School program is active and successful.

Edgefield United Methodist Church has seen many ups and downs in our past. However, we have begun to see growth and inspiration come into our church once again. With God’s grace and guidance, we will continue to grow in size and spirituality to serve Him and His people.
