"An understanding of the past, illuminates the the present, and gives vision for the future."

Elliott County, Kentucky was created from Carter, Lawrence, and Morgan County, Kentucky in April 1869. At the time, the precincts forming the new county were a Democratic enclave in what was the Republican stronghold of eastern Kentucky.

A courthouse fire in 1957 caused a major loss of county records. Only deed books and some of the recorded liens survived.

The Elliott County Historical Society was formed to stimulate and encourage the collection, preservation, archiving and interpretation of the artifacts, papers, and other documents pertaining to the family history, heritage and culture of Elliott County and surrounding regions.
