Elmer H. Franzen (1891 – 1978) was an active member of the community. He was a member of the Itasca Fire Department and participated in a number of community music groups. He was the President of the Itasca State Bank but is perhaps best known for being a school board member from 1933-1946. He headed the three man school board for seven years and was the first president of the seven member school board. In 1964, the school board named the new elementary school to honor him for his unselfish commitment and dedication to the children of Itasca.
A portrait of Elmer H. Franzen and a plaque in his honor are located in the main hallway of Elmer H. Franzen Intermediate School.
Elmer H. Franzen Intermediate School houses approximately 270 children in grades third, fourth, and fifth. It is located in a quiet, residential neighborhood next to Franzen Park.
Franzen was remodeled in 1990 under an Airport Improvement Program Soundproofing Grant and Life Safety project. In addition to being soundproofed, the building is fully carpeted and air-conditioned and includes an art room, music room, media center, and multi-purpose room.
