About Townships

In Michigan, if you don't live in a city, you do live in a township. Townships are a product of Michigan's early history, and Michigan is one of 20 states in the United States that currently has some form of township government.

Michigan contains 1,240 townships that vary in size and population from 10 to 96,796 people. More than half of all Michigan residents live in a township.

Michigan townships govern over 96% of Michigan's land area--in which over 58% of Michigan's property values are located--and provide essential services to over 51% of Michigan's citizens.
