First Baptist Church of Jasper

198 East Church Street
706-253-5015

History

The Norton Creek Baptist Church was organized circa 1848 across the Cove Road from the present Norton Cemetery. In 1856 it moved to the present site on the Federal Road (now East Church Street) in Jasper. The church was renamed The First Baptist Church of Jasper in 1956.

Circa 1898 its pastor represented Jasper, Ball Ground, Marble Hill and Bethany at the Southern Baptist Convention. In 1900 the Jasper Church joined with these churches to form the Ball Ground Association which became a member of the Baptist Convention of the State of Georgia. The church is presently a member of the Etowah Association. Special missions offerings (foreign and home) are divided between SBC and CBF. The budget mission designation is divided: 50% to the National Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, 25% to Georgia Baptist Convention, and 25% to Georgia CBF. All designated CBF offerings go to National CBF. Thus, the church is dually aligned SBC and CBF.

Because of concern over potential liability, the church in March 1985 adopted a corporate structure, the official name being “The First Baptist Church of Jasper, Georgia, Inc.” Church property is controlled and administered by a Board of Trustees. Spiritual matters and daily conduct of church affairs were unchanged. Article 1.8 of the Corporate By-Laws provides “The spiritual affairs and day to day business of the church shall be conducted through the Pastor, Board of Deacons, and officers as elected by the church membership and committees as needed, appointed or authorized by the Pastor, Board of Deacons, or church membership.”
