First Presbyterian Church

125 West Main Street
859-498-5885

Mission:

To bear witness to the Gospel through worship, fellowship, and community outreach.

History:

The First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Sterling was organized in 1795, three years after Kentucky became a state. The first church structure was located on High Street and the second one was built in 1829 directly across from our present location on Main Street.

During the Civil War the congregation split into two groups. From 1869 to 1884 they continued to worship in the same building. Then in 1884 the southern church constructed our present building which was dedicated
on Feb. 8, 1885. In 1907, the two churches reunited. The older building across the street was sold and the proceeds were used to remodel our present facility. The round stained glass window located in the present fellowship hall was brought from the older building.

The educational wing in back was added on in the 1970’s and in 1991 the congregation purchased the old Post Office, now referred to as the Presbyterian Post. In 1995, we celebrated our Bicentennial.

About Us:

First Presbyterian Church of Mt. Sterling is a church for folks who don't have it all together. A church for those who wrestle with big questions. A church that seeks out the mystery of God in Jesus Christ.

Take some time to look around and discover the many ways we are doing ministry in Christ’s name. We are a part of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and the Presbytery of Transylvania.

As a people of faith, we strive to bear witness to the Gospel through worship, fellowship, and community outreach. Wherever you are on life’s journey, you are welcome at First Presbyterian. So come and share in this Good News.
