Mission:

The mission of First United Methodist Church of Huntingdon is to gather for worship, fellowship, study and then scatter to offer Christ to others and build a better community.

History:

In the 1820s, Huntingdon was part of the Sandy River Circuit of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was served by visiting ministers. The first record of an organized Huntingdon Methodist Church dates back to 1844.

In 1877, the first denominational Sabbath School in the town, after the Civil War, was organized in the frame Methodist Church near the corner of what is today East Main Street and Third Avenue North. Sunday School has remained a meaningful experience for the children and adults who have attended the Methodist Church throughout the years.

Three years later a lot one block west of this site was purchased and a brick church was erected. This building was remodeled in 1910. Over the years, many a bride and groom have marched down the aisles and before the altar pledged their troth, infants were christened, and the final remains of loved ones were brought for the last rites. The building was modernized in 1947/48.

Since 1971, the congregation has enjoyed a stately Georgian Colonial brick church erected on Asbury Circle. The tall, hexagonal steeple, crowned with a Celtic cross, houses the century plus bell which was used to call the faithful to worship. Priceless stained glass windows from the old church are in use as well as lovely memorial windows. A multi-purpose Christian Life Center complete with stage area, beautiful arched windows, and sports carpeting for half court basketball was added in 1991. Also, included in the addition were new kitchen facilities, a brightly colored Pre-School room, relocated church offices, and a large youth room. The sanctuary was completely refurbished in 1996.

First United Methodist Church has a rich history of serving its members and the community through Sunday School classes and church organizations for every age group. We also share our facilities with several public service groups in the Huntingdon area.
