A church that is making disciples of Jesus Christ. It is through baptism we are called to take that first step in the life long journey of discipleship. discipleship at Griffin FUMC is not about a program. It's not about a ministry. It is about a life long commitment to a lifestyle that strives to imitate Christ in thought, work, and deed. It is through worship, classes, courses, experience, relationships, and the giving of time and resources that hearts are being transformed into the likeness of Christ.

First United Methodist Church of Griffin was begun by a land grant from General Lewis Lawrence Griffin in 1840. General Griffin gave one square acre of land to each the Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, and Episcopal churches on which they built their church homes.

A warehouse was FUMC's first place of worship in 1841. A new church building was erected in 1842 on the corner of Hill and Solomon Streets. It was a white one room frame building served by circuit pastors until 1846 when it was designated as a station and the Rev. W.D. Martin was appointed as the first full time pastor.

In 1855 a brick building was erected on the opposite corner of Hill and Solomon Streets. The Wachovia Bank building now occupies this site. The brick building, though changed and enlarged several times, served as home of the growing congregation for 107 years.

In 1961, after 120 years in downtown Griffin, the church home moved to 25 acres, located on the corner of Maple Drive and Wesley Drive where it is presently located. The first church service was held in the new sanctuary on Sunday, April 16, 1961.

On March2, 1997, First United Methodist church voted to move forward in completing a new office complex, music suite, and Christian Enrichment center. On Sunday, June 11, 2000, the congregation celebrated the grand opening of that building project.
