About Us
Food Works at Two Rivers Center was founded in 1987 to address the root causes of childhood hunger by returning students and their communities back to the land through hands-on food and gardening educational opportunities. Today, Food Works at Two Rivers Center has emerged as Central Vermont’s hands-on food and agricultural education center working to strengthen local food systems and empower children, families, and seniors to grow, prepare, eat and preserve their own foods. We offer ongoing classes, workshops and summer camps on food growing, cooking, food preservation, backyard medicinal herbs and nutrition basics.
For over 20 years, Food Works has never swayed from our unique position as a grassroots organization that develops community-based educational approaches to address the growing concerns of poor nutrition, diet, health, unsustainable land use, and declining food security. By connecting people back to the land and the natural world, all of our work mobilizes people to effect positive change for themselves and their neighbors.
Our community programs support local food systems by connecting area farmers to under-served populations including schools, Senior Meals sites, health care facilities and early childhood education centers. The 5-acre organic Foodbank Farm at the Two Rivers Center grows carrots, potatoes, onions and tomatoes exclusively for member agencies of the Vermont Foodbank.
The Two River Center’s historic 1836 Farmhouse and Barn are being fully restored to house a visitor’s center, community teaching kitchen, living history museum, an air-controlled root cellar, a resource library, meeting rooms, and offices. The silent phase of a $2.8 million Capital Campaign is currently underway to complete this restoration process.
