The Forkland Community Center was founded in 1971 when the Forkland School closed after operating for 43 years. People living in the Forkland community pledged money to buy the school buildings and incorporated the Community Center. Its aims are both to preserve and promote the rural heritage of our unique and scenic Knobs area, and also to provide a facility for many educational and recreational community activities.

Over the years, we've maintained and improved the original two buildings (on the National Register of Historic Places), and we've also added a 1790s log cabin, concession stand, picnic shelter, and storage building. A county fire and rescue building, originally built by local people, is behind our main building.

We have several special events open to the public during the year, including our Forkland Heritage Festival & Revue each October, one of the few true folk festivals in Kentucky. Other annual events include a Pie Supper in March, the Halloween Carnival, an elegant Christmas Dinner, and Twilight Christmas. The Forkland Lincoln Museum and Gift Shop are open regularly throughout the year. Forkland is well-known for its artists, and their works are displayed throughout the Community Center buildings. Additional activities include weekly art classes, Cub Scout and Boy Scout meetings, basketball, family reunions, picnics, and volunteer work days.
