The Hayshire Elementary School provides a child-centered educational program for its nearly four hundred students in grades K-2. There is a strong emphasis on the building of communication skills throughout the curriculum. The language arts program focuses on meeting the individual needs of all students with all children learning to read and write successfully. Building basic skills of mathematics and problem solving is fundamental at Hayshire Elementary School. Developing a love of learning is evident throughout the curriculum.

Literacy is a high priority at Hayshire. Various interventions are available to help children become successful readers. The teachers participate in training to improve instructional techniques and strategies. Workshops are offered for parents to learn how to help at home. Special home kits with games and materials are provided for families.

Hayshire's classroom teachers and specialists in reading support programs, special education, instructional support, music, art, library, physical education, counseling, and gifted education combine varying backgrounds and areas of expertise to provide a caring atmosphere for a developmentally appropriate curriculum. Creating caring classroom environments emphasizing the growth of social skills in "positive action students" is part of the regular day at Hayshire Elementary School. Classroom teachers begin each day with a morning meeting with their students. Students practice the social skills that make a caring environment.

The Parent Volunteer Program serves as an important part of the school environment. Parental support for Hayshire is evident through the active Parent Teacher Organization. The PTO helps plan special events and programs. The Fall Festival is an example of one of those events. In October, a special day of autumn activities is scheduled with storytelling and country music. Families are invited to share in the country atmosphere. Family Nights are scheduled throughout the year as special evenings for families to come to school with their children to participate in fun activities. Parents, teachers, and children working together is a basic theme as Hayshire strives for success for all students.

Hayshire began serving the Emigsville area in 1957 with a 12-classroom building. An addition in 1970 increased the building to its present size of 20 classrooms with a cafeteria/all- purpose room, library, health room, and several office and conference rooms.
