Heery Woods State Park was purchased by the Iowa Conservation Commission in 1934 and has been managed by the Butler County Conservation Board since 1974. Development of the park was planned by the National Parks Service and Iowa Conservation Commission with work performed by the Works Progress Adminstration. The north side of the park includes two open shelter houses, a primitive restroom, camping facilities, a playground, flush toilets, hiking and biking trails, and shower house. A low head dam provides excellent fishing opportunities for bass, walleye, northern, and catfish.
