History:
Hickman is a small, rural, farming community that lies along the Tuolumne River, at the eastern edge of the Central Valley. Hickman School District, one of the oldest districts in our region, was established by area farmers back in 1897. These visionary residents created one of the first ever canal systems to bring water from the foothills to their farms. They then set about building a school for their children, which quickly became the central focus of their community. While some things have changed since then, many have not. The residents are still actively involved in "building" the school for their children and it continues to be the hub of the community. Our town remains small, and a good many of our students come from within a ten-mile radius of farmland that consists of dairies and rolling hills planted in almonds, walnuts, peaches, pastures, and other dairy crops. While the school population may be considered small, our vision, and the vision of our students, continues to benefit from the visionary, collaborative involvement of their community families.
In May of 1999, the Hickman School District received approval to create its first-ever middle school. Because of this, the elementary school began to follow a strategic planning process, which had involved representation from throughout the community and culminated in the passage of a school bond. The bond measure to build a gymnasium/multipurpose complex, a state-of-the-art library media center, and the new classrooms, was passed by our community with an unheard of 93% approval rate. Obviously, this highly involved, highly supportive community is the backbone of our success.
The climate of Hickman Charter School District is one of caring, involved teamwork with a common goal of unity for all children.
