K is for Kids Foundation Inc. had its beginnings in 2002 when founder Karen D. Clawson began raising more books for her children’s school library, noting how challenging it was to keep up with the so many students’ need for more books to read. Realizing how efficient it would be to donate books to a children’s library — one book could be read by dozens, even hundreds, of children for years! — Clawson launched Bring a Book, Bring a Friend™ Fun’raisers in her own home in 2003 with the support of families and staff. The program Supporters of the School Library soon followed. As one onlooker observed, “Schools all over the country are holding book fairs and book drives and S.O.S.L. can serve like an umbrella over them all, uniting their cause.” The success of these early efforts along with increasing requests by other educational institutions and charities to be benefited inspired the formation five years later of this public educational charity for children.
