About Us:
For over a decade, Metropolitan Community College-Maple Woods has been partnering with local businesses and organizations to bring the surrounding community the opportunity to experience lifelong learning, cultural diversity and imaginative entertainment.
Founded in 1999 with the help of the River and Prairie Storyweavers, the annual Kansas City Storytelling Celebration has grown from a small group of local tellers to a nationwide event. The original goal of fostering and healthy dialogue about diversity and community involvement has grown to include a wider number of individuals each year - from 20,000 in its inaugural year to more than 250,000 in its 12 year run.
Schools, libraries, senior centers, Boys and Girls Clubs, and special sites around the metro area help community members of all ages, races and backgrounds experience the world through stories.
What kind of stories? The Storytelling Celebration features narratives and experiences from all genres, from Native America tribal tales to African folk songs to tales of the macabre. Urban legends and Asian folklore, stories for children and adults alike, all share the spotlight to bring the audience a unique understanding of the world at large and of their own lives.
MCC-Maple Woods and its community partners invite you to experience this one-of-a-kind event and spread the word about the importance of teaching our community to become citizens of the world through stories.
